1997 was Bret Hart’s final year in WWE and it was also one of the most important ones. While he was a central figure like usual, he wasn’t always the babyface hero that fans had seen over the past few years. If anything, he was a heel who had found a new stride. It was WrestleMania 13 when Bret Hart and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin had their now-famous “double turn” that saw Austin turn face and Hart turn heel.
After that, Bret Hart would become a superstar who was a heel in the United States of America but a babyface in other parts of the world. However, the circumstances leading to all of it put Bret Hart’s perspective into a more reasonable category. The frustration in the job had been building for months and there were many times where he had been screwed over by someone or the other – even leading him to snap at Vince McMahon.
In kayfabe. his meltdown was quite justified.
