Lex Luger was the next superstar after The Ultimate Warrior who Vince McMahon viewed as the next top star of the company. He had the look of a top star and WWE felt that it was the right call to turn him from a narcissistic heel to an American hero overnight. The transition was far too rapid and Luger never really thrived in the spot as many as hoped.
Luckily for WWE, Bret Hart was a rising star around the same time and they realized in 1994 to go with him instead.
