Wade Barrett

A British Point of View: The Barrage Begins?

This year’s Money in the Bank is now taking shape and WWE have decided to go with a heel and face dynamic for each Ladder match. On one side we have the WWE Championship Ladder match whose participants are all babyfaces and on the other hand, the World Heavyweight Championship ladder match are all heels.

A new plan seems to be forming and as much as we all play fantasy booker at times, I thought this one might be worth sharing with you all.

Wade Barrett lost the Intercontinental Championship at Payback when Curtis Axel was thrown in to the match at last minute to cover for the injured Fandango. What if WWE took the title from Barrett because they have bigger plans for him during the summer? What if Wade Barrett wins the Money in the Bank Briefcase? After all, wasn’t this the plan for WrestleMania before Barrett got injured?

Dolph Ziggler gained sympathy by losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Del Rio at Payback after receiving some vicious kicks to the head. I originally said that the end game was to probably have Ziggler regain the title at SummerSlam. Since then, the rematch between Ziggler and Del Rio has been announced at Money in the Bank.

What if Ziggler has another hard fought encounter but manages to regain the Championship from Del Rio, only for Barrett to cash in immediately and take the title From Ziggler, robbing him of his moment yet again. They can use the angle to give Ziggler an even more frustrated demeanour which ultimately splits him from AJ and Big E.

This opens the door for Ziggler and Barrett to face each other at SummerSlam which if built properly can be the big match that we haven’t really seen before and it also prevents WWE from having two briefcase winners running round for the next couple of months. Ziggler can regain the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam and then hopefully could get a reign that actually means something.

Of course, this isn’t exactly ideal as it means that Ziggler would be a 3 time World Heavyweight Champion without him really having a reign as such. The Championship would be bounced around like a hot potato and Wade Barrett’s first reign would be short lived. It does however get Barrett in to the main event scene and opens the door for future matchups which are original and appealing.

WWE are all about quick wins and buzz. Making Barrett the champion could be the catalyst needed to keep the momentum going through the Summer and prove that they truly do see him as a big star in the future.

Do you agree? Do you see WWE going in to a different direction? Do you think it should be Wade Barrett’s time? Or do you think this fellow Brit is just being biased for his own countryman?

I’ll let you decide whilst I go put the kettle on…
