Punk 365: A Wrestlezone Forums Special – Part 2

It’s no secret. I’m a professional wrestling fan of over 25 years. While the majority of today’s wrestling fans find and witness their history by purchasing DVD’s and clicking through YouTube, I lived through and witnessed five eras and evolutions of the product as it all unfolded. I saw the “slam heard around the world” as it happened. I remember watching the year-long buildup leading into the collision of the Mega-Powers. I watched live as the Ultimate Challenge took my breath away. I saw Bret Hart rise from a tag team specialist to world champion. I’ve seen countless attendance records being broken during pay per view events. I saw Brock Lesnar break the record for being the youngest reigning WWE champion in history and Vince McMahon for being the oldest. I’ve lived through all of John Cena’s ten, record-breaking reigns as champion.

I’ve witnessed years and years of records being broken and history being written. Some records are easier to break than others. In today’s pro-wrestling world, the product has evolved to the point where redundancy and change must be a constant. The bar has been raised and lowered many times and it’s becoming more and more difficult to please the fans. The word “stale” is constantly being thrown around and has become one of the most overused words in a wrestling fan’s personal dictionary. In order for the product to avoid being stale, talent must be constantly be created and championships must regularly change hands. These are a few of the reasons why CM Punk’s current WWE championship run is so rare and historic.

So you’re asking me to name my most or least favorite moment of CM Punk’s 365 day reign as champion? Ironically, my most and least favorite moment both happened on last week’s episode of Monday Night Raw. It was when CM Punk stood in the middle of the ring in front of a display that listed himself as the 8th (soon to be 7th and most likely the 6th) longest reigning WWE champion of all time. It’s my least favorite moment because, just yesterday, he trumped my all-time favorite superstar’s record of 371 days; Randy “Macho Man” Savage R.I.P. However, it’s my favorite moment because, once again, I’ve witnessed history and will continue to do so as long as CM Punk wears that WWE championship title. Rare history like this doesn’t happen every day. But to this fan, it’s bittersweet.
