Stars in Progress: AJ Down, CM Punk, HHH/Lesnar and More

Daniel BryanDANIEL BRYAN – ONE STEP DOWN

I'm still not positive the teased match between Daniel Bryan and Charlie Sheen will even take place, but I'm planning ahead just in case. The idea of it alone makes me fear for Bryan's future.

As a fan of D. Bryan, you could look at it one of two ways. You can think any publicity is good publicity and that the mainstream attention this will likely bring can help Bryan. Or, if you're like me, you think it's the wrong direction for an up-and-coming star and better suited for the Santino Marellas of the wrestling world.

Celebrities always go over in pro wrestling. Period. And when they go over comedic figures or mid-card heels like Big Show, it's fine. But credible stars and world champion contenders gain very little to nothing as a result.

There's no doubt in my mind Daniel Bryan's character can make it entertaining, but at a time when WWE desperately needs stars, this is more counterproductive than beneficial.

I'm aware this potential match and storyline will receive tremendous focus. That has to be a good thing for Daniel Bryan, right? I don't think so. Maybe that's true for someone like Cody Rhodes, but not Bryan.

Focus is good when you focus on the right thing(s). AJ/Bryan was the right thing. Bryan/Punk was the right thing. "The best in the world" gimmick was the right thing.

Daniel Bryan vs Charlie Sheen — not so much.
