What’s Bothering Me: Paul Heyman, RVD, Cena vs Johnny

John Cena#1. JOHN CENA VS JOHNNY ACE

If WWE would have never teased a CM Punk/Johnny Ace program months ago, I might feel different about the apparent Cena/Johnny feud. Cena would have been the logical choice as the babyface counterpart to the heel authority figure.

When trying to recreate Vince McMahon vs Steve Austin, the players need to fit.

One one side, you have John Laurinaitis. He's the best choice Vince McMahon has right now to replace himself. Johnny is an easy character to hate and most fans are aware that Laurinaitis is playing his legitimate role in the company. He has genuine power, and we love to hate him for it.

Then, playing the part of "Stone Cold", you have John Cena as option #1. Well, that's not actually true. He might have been your first option six months ago, but you screwed up and put Punk in that position first.

And he did one hell of a job at it.

John vs Johnny can still be a success. But not to the extent that the alternative would have been. You need a true babyface that 100% of the fans are behind. John Cena fans, those for and those against, are so loyal, it wouldn't surprise me if Laurinaitis received cheers at some point working Cena. You certainly can't have that.

And Punk? He doesn't get to work the Rock. No Brock either. And he's not getting the huge anti-authority role that basically made Steve Austin's career. ALL of that is going to John Cena. Hell, Punk doesn't even get anymore pipe bombs apparently.

Punk is still the second biggest fish in the great big pond, but the distance between number one and number two is exponential. And it just seems to continue growing further and further apart.
