Maria Menounos

A British Point of View: Maria Me-Nou-Nos

To be honest the show wasn’t poor but just didn’t feel any different than that which we have seen in recent weeks. We ask for stories to be given more time to build but yet when we get a decent amount of weeks in between the shows we are quick to throw it back at WWE for being bland.

Is this something that creative should avoid? Is there much more they could have done? It’s a hard balance. WWE could throw Rock and Cena in to a match before WrestleMania but that would create two issues. It could take the shine of Rock returning to the ring (Just like Survivor Series did in a lot of people’s minds) and it is also a chance for people to get injured. After Cena’s car crash this week it might have rung some alarm bells in to Vince’s head about how close they came to losing their ‘Once in a Lifetime’ clash.

WWE has added a celebrity to the show now in the form of Maria Menounos (Yes, I had to Google it.) Not exactly a draw for most fans, as if you are outside of the USA you probably won’t have a clue who on earth she is. She has previously worked with WWE through a guest host role on RAW and seemingly is a fan of professional wrestling which helps, but why on earth do you have to so poorly use a spot on your biggest card of the year?

Surely she could have been added as a ring announcer or a managerial role to allow people who have worked their asses off for the past year get a chance to shine. People have expressed desires to get Natayla in to the main event picture. With Kharma not being in a suitable situation to work this year’s show then the obvious choice was to create something where all the Divas could get involved (If someone mentions the word Lumber Jill Match, I’ll scream!) Matches such as Championship scramble could have worked with Divas such as Kelly Kelly, Eve, Tamina Snuka, AJ, Beth Phoenix and Natayla taking the helm. Give us something we would have appreciated. Having a celebrity in a match or involved in the event will only bring you the same mediocre mentions on prime time television anyway.

I can’t remember a time when someone turned round and said that a “celebrity” being on WWE TV made them tune in to see what would happen. Vince’s obsession to become accepted by mainstream media is not doing anything to draw the general public in and it’s only hurting your true fanbase.

Shaq against Big Show seems would have been fun at least because most fans would have accepted it due to their altercation on RAW in the past. Having Menounos (Yes, pasted it this time!) involved in this match appears pointless as what is the real story for them to have this match?

This match is not going to demonstrate any skills that the Divas have and will be the filler match where half the stadium goes to the bathroom. The Divas division is in a poor state at the minute but when you actually look at the talent available then you realize that it shouldn’t be. WWE currently have more than enough talent to put on a Divas match which can hold your attention for longer than 4 minutes of the grandest stage of them all.

No matter how much we talk about these things it will not change as the needs to try and become accepted by the many will out way the thoughts and opinions of the few. I give credit that WWE are trying to involve people with an interest in wrestling and by all account apparently Menounos (I’m getting good at this now) is actually a fan of the industry. But please WWE; give us a reason to watch it. The biggest show of the year should incorporate all your rivalries which have been brewing for months and come to a head with an epic encounter. It shouldn’t be based on something created at last minute just to get a minor celebrity to participate.

Either way we are stuck with it. It might pleasantly surprise us but in all cases it won’t draw any buys when an actual feud may have brought more PPV buys in.

With one more RAW to go before the big show (No pun intended) we are still watching in wait to see if anything substantial changes between now and the Showcase of the Immortals.

Are you still excited? Do you look forward to the inclusion of Maria Menounos at WrestleMania? Has your opinion of the show changed and will you get Budweiser or Coors Light when you’re at the concession stand?
