AEW Dynamite Hits And Misses (4/24/24)

All Elite Wrestling returned to Daily’s Place for the April 24, 2024, episode of AEW Dynamite. The show featured EVP Bucks, Kazuchika Okada, Mercedes Moné, and World Champion Swerve Strickland among others.

IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley had his first title defense on Dynamite as well. The main segment saw a huge turn of events. Without wasting anymore time, let’s dive right into the biggest hits and misses from AEW Dynamite.

Who is Chuck Taylor’s TRUE “Best Friend”? Orange Cassidy or Trent Beretta? | 4/24/24, AEW Dynamite

Miss – Opening segment on AEW Dynamite

Trent Barretta dragged Orange Cassidy to the ring to kickoff AEW Dynamite in Jacksonville. Trent delivered a vicious beatdown on his former beat down. He then called out Chuck Taylor to the ring, and asked him to make his decision. Chuckie T chose OC and proceeded to attack Trent, who managed to escape.

I was surprised Tony Khan booked Best Friends in the opening segment. The IWGP title defense between Jon Moxley and Hobbs, in my opinion, should’ve kicked off Dynamite. Trent and Chuck Taylor could’ve worked in the middle of the show. A parking lot fight between the two former friends was announced for AEW Rampage.

Will Ospreay SHINES! Casino Gauntlet Match for an International Title Shot! | 4/24/24, AEW Dynamite

Hit – Casino Gauntlet Match

Eight men fought for a shot at the AEW International Championship on Dynamite this week. Jay White and Dante Martin kicked off the action. Penta, Will Ospreay, Jay Lethal, Kyle O’Reilly, Komander, and Lance Archer followed.

There were plenty of near falls and some solid exchanges. Ospreay’s selling of Archer’s forearm strike was brilliant. The Aerial Assassin picked up the win following a Hidden Blade on Komander. He’ll challenge Roderick Strong for the title at AEW Double or Nothing next month.

Who chose to sit under the Learning Tree & NEW FTW Champion, Chris Jericho? | 4/24/24, AEW Dynamite

Miss – Chris Jericho and Big Bill segment

Chris Jericho came down to the ring to brag about his FTW Championship win. The Lionheart said he won the title for his fans. He said Hook should’ve listened to him when he had the chance. Big Bill interrupted the segment. He said he wanted to sit under the learning tree of Chris Jericho.

It seems we are getting an alliance between Jericho and Big Bill. I’m not a fan of this whole “learning tree of Chris Jericho” gimmick. It didn’t work with Hook, in my opinion. We’ll see how this one goes.

NEW AEW World Champ Swerve Strickland vs ROH World TV Champ Kyle Fletcher! | 4/24/24, AEW Dynamite

Hit – Swerve Strickland vs. Kyle Fletcher

Swerve Strickland collided with Kyle Fletcher in an elimination match on AEW Dynamite this week. This was a great match packed with some great action. Both men went back and forth for nearly 15 minutes till the champion picked up the win.

This week’s Dynamite was angle heavy so this match not headlining the show makes sense. That being said, it should’ve been the final match of the night instead of Moxley vs. Hobbs. Swerve’s Double or Nothing opponent will be revealed next week on AEW Dynamite.

Miss – Injury scare on AEW Dynamite

Jon Moxley defended his IWGP Championship against Powerhouse Hobbs in the final match of the night. Hobbs seemingly suffered an injury nearly nine minutes into the match. Mox grabbed him in a chokehold and retained his title via referee’s submission.

Hobbs was seen to be limping after taking a barrage of punches on the turnbuckle from Moxley. The conclusion felt rushed but it was the right call. We’ll have the latest update on Hobbs if and when its announced.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Jack Perry puts his hands on AEW CEO & GM, Tony Khan! | 4/24/24, AEW Dynamite

Hit – Tony Khan gets attacked

Jack Perry made his return to AEW at Dynasty. The Scapegoat helped EVP Bucks become the tag team champions in their ladder match against FTR. Perry showed up on AEW Dynamite with Bucks and Kazuchika Okada. He came down to the ring and cut a promo before asking Tony Khan to come out.

Perry said he always wanted the best for AEW. He then asked Tony Khan to reinstate him. The boss gave his approval with a handshake. Perry raised Tony’s hand only to punch him in the gut. The Bucks and Okada arrived to demand answers from Perry. We then saw Matthew and Nicholas Jackson take out their boss with a TK Driver.

I thought the segment served its purpose of establishing Bucks, Okada and Perry as the ultimate heel stable in AEW. Props to Bucks for protecting Tony’s neck during the TK Driver spot. Yes, Ton needs to work on his selling a bit. Also, the locker room should’ve arrived as soon as the Bucks took out Tony with the piledriver.
