#2.) The Undertaker & ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin

This is perhaps the best example on this list of how the titles were brilliantly used as a prop in the main storyline. To put it in context, there were four major characters in all of this – The Undertaker and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin being the two main ones, while Mankind and Kane were the other two, who were also tag team champions at the time.

The story around the summer involved The Brothers of Destruction going after the WWF Championship held by Austin. Undertaker would accidentally cost Austin the title but the latter won it back a night later. Seeing the hatred and disdain between the two, Vince McMahon decided to exploit that by having them team up together.

They ended up winning the tag team titles from then-champions Kane & Mankind, only to lose it 15 days later thanks to the fact that they wouldn’t get along. It fuelled the interest for their “Highway to Hell” SummerSlam main event at the Garden.
