After the disastrous Enzo Amore Cruiserweight-era, it was time for a fresh start, and with the new year, a new tournament was announced that would see a brand new Cruiserweight Champion crowned at WrestleMania. Roderick Strong got called up temporarily to fill a spot, due to lack of superstars in the tournament.
He turned out to be one of the best things about the tournament itself, as he went through both Hideo Itami and former Cruiserweight Champion Kalisto before facing tournament favorite Cedric Alexander in the semi-finals. They would go on to have a hard-hitting semi-final, which turned out to be the best match of the tournament. Strong proved himself even in defeat, and Cedric Alexander got a big rub by beating him.
