In 2013 once their ROH contracts expired, The American Wolves decided to try their luck with WWE. They took part in a tryout camp and were said to have “stood out” in a batch of over 30 participants. Naturally, this comes as no surprise given how much experience they had prior to their tryout.
They were then called back to the Performance Center for another week-long tryout. They appeared as John Cahill and Derek Billington respectively, facing then-NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension. While Richards did suffer an unfortunate botch during the match, there’s not been any explanation as to why they weren’t signed by the company.
The only rumor regarding that was the fact that they didn’t hear back from WWE. They then took their talents to Impact Wrestling and greatly succeeded.
