Stephanie Vaquer took inspiration from a great Japanese tradition for her in-ring look.
“La Primera” recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard. During the conversation, Vaquer revealed the source of her signature face paint she wears in the ring. According to Vaquer, the current NXT Women’s Champion, she adopted it from the Japanese practice of kintsugi.
Also known as “join with gold” or “golden repair,” kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by fixing the broken pieces with gold to make it beautiful again. There’s also a philosophy behind the practice, as kintsugi is meant to add to the history of an object instead of disguising it.
Stephanie Vaquer explains the significance behind the design of her face paint
“Yeah, of course. It’s difficult for me to explain in English, but it’s a Japanese culture. The name is Kintsugi. For example, when you break a plate, Japanese people believe [you can repair it with kintsugi]. You can use gold or silver and you make a ‘new’ one, but it’s more beautiful,” Vaquer said. “It’s more important when something broke and you repair it.”
Stephanie Vaquer also spoke about the depth of the NXT women’s division and called it the best women’s division on the planet. Therefore, she wants to lead that division and is proud to be called NXT Women’s Champion.
“The NXT Women’s Division is the best Women’s Division on the planet, to me. So, if we continue to work together and [we’re a] good team, we will continue to be the best division on the planet. So, I’m so proud of all of the women’s division. I’m learning a lot here. And for me, it’s so important to be the champion representing all my NXT Women’s Division.”
