The Cashbox: All Hail The King; My Lawler Memories

Jerry lawlerIt was chilling. There's really no other way to describe witnessing Raw live this past Monday. Most of you, like me, were hit with a flood of emotions that were hard to describe. The type of emotions you simply never want to feel again.

Those moved in some way by Jerry Lawler's heart attack weren't just friends, colleagues or relatives. Fans wasted no time starting prayer chains and other signs of support once they heard the news.

It must have worked, too. I'm no doctor, but I can't imagine the odds after your heart stops beating for nearly 20 minutes being in your favor.

We all knew Lawler could wrestle; he's clearly a fighter as well.

I've been reminiscing a bit since Monday's tragic events, recalling some of my own memories from Jerry Lawler's legendary career and using YouTube to fill in the gaps. I thought this week would be a perfect time to share with you a few of my favorite Jerry Lawler moments.

Note: There's nothing to debate or argue here. It's not a "Top 3" list of any kind; it's simply a few fun memories I wanted to share with you in light of these events.

#3. Jerry Lawler vs Tazz

This might not go down as a particularly special moment in Lawler's career when it's all said and done, but it stands out to me as a favorite for some reason. I was always a Tazz fan and that might be part of it.

Jerry Lawler's program with Tazz was short and simple that culminated at ECW's One Night Stand in 2006 and although Lawler didn't win the match (he actually lost in 30 seconds), I like to think that he won the war.

He didn't; I just like to think that.

#2. Andy Kaufman

Of course, of course. You can't have any Lawler list without this being mentioned somehow.

To be honest, Lawler's feud with Andy Kaufman was a bit before my time. But that didn't keep me from watching old tapes of the infamous feud and getting a sense of how great it truly was, as said by other wrestlers and fans from that era.

Andy Kaufman was a natural performer, so I gather, and Lawler was something else. It was excellent entertainment, even for those that watching it for the first time after the fact.

#1. Lawler's Feud w/ Bret Hart

THIS is what I remember most about Jerry Lawler, the wrestler.

Back when Hart could talk and Jerry Lawler was an incredible heel, in every sense of the word. These two had such great chemistry during a time when "Kiss My Foot" matches were considered "edgy".

I even remember being terrified of Lawler's dentist, Dr. Isaac Yankem DDS, a gimmick that could never get over in wrestling today. But I guess that's fitting seeing as how it didn't get over then either.

When you look back at this feud, it's just fascinating to see how simple things were back then. And guys like Lawler and Bret made it look so easy. While others might say the "slap heard around the world" is their favorite Lawler memory, mine is definitely his program with the Hitman.

Keep fighting, King, and hurry back. Monday nights won't be the same while you're gone.
