WWE NXT star Trick Williams shocked the wrestling world by capturing the TNA World Title.
A few weeks ago on WWE NXT Battleground, Trick Williams defeated Joe Hendry to become the new TNA World Champion, leaving fans stunned. This week on WWE NXT, Williams defended the title against Mike Santana, where interference from First Class’ AJ Francis and KC Navarro allowed Williams to pin Santana and retain the championship.
Even TNA President Carlos Silva, who sat ringside at NXT Battleground, was visibly surprised by the outcome. Backstage reactions echoed that shock. Tommy Dreamer recently revealed that Williams’ victory created a wave of uncertainty behind the scenes in TNA.
On Busted Open Radio, Trick Williams directly asked Tommy Dreamer about the amount of heat he was receiving in the TNA locker room. Dreamer said, “I have received the most amount of texts from the moment you won… I watched your match with a lot of employees and people who work there… and everyone turned to me and they were like, it was almost like, ‘What are we going to do now?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know.’”
Tommy Dreamer also pointed out that much of the backstage tensions came due cross-promotional partnerships. “These deals have always fallen apart. If this deal fell apart today, you’re the champ. We’d have to like you… we’d have to declare a new champ, because, hey, our champ works somewhere else. So I think there’s the scary part.” [H/T: pwmania]
