Nikki Bella and Brie Bella had a lot to say about their WWE gear.
The pair spoke with McKenzie Mitchell on Threads about a variety of looks they had throughout their career. The WWE Hall of Famers are two of the most iconic females in WWE history, with some of the most recognizable looks in the ring.
Nikkie Bella spoke about their influence on women’s wrestling. She calls it “surreal” when she hears today’s stars cite the Bells Twins as their influence in the business.
“It’s mindblowing and it’s so surreal because I’ll be seeing these interviews of these incredible women in the industry, whether it’s WWE, AEW, TNA, all these incredible wrestling companies, and when they say Bri and I were the inspiration, I’m always like, ‘It’s like Pinch Me moments.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, really me?’ They even call me like, ‘Oh my god, did you see Britt’s interview or did you see, you know, all these different women?’ And it’s incredible, but it was, um, it shows you when you’re so authentically you, the impact that has. We were never trying to be anyone else but us, and we were always for empowering women. We wanted that road, but I never thought we would be alive today to see the impact it’s had.”
Nikki Bella Was Inspired By Her Soccer Background
Nikki Bella continued, revealing that she based her iconic attire on her time playing soccer.
“For me, it actually was who I was, a soccer player, because like some people know and some people don’t, but Bri and I, we were competitive soccer players. Like soccer was our life. And I went on to play college, and then I was going to play pros, and that’s like the league in the US had folded for women at the time I was going to do it. But then when I was thinking of going back in playing and I was training, I was going to go to Italy and play enough, and she came to me about Diva search.”
“But when I started to think of ‘Fearless’ Nikki, all I could think about was my soccer days. So that’s when I was like, you know what, I’m going to make a jersey sexy. I’m going to put… I was always number two in soccer, like that was my number. So that’s why I wore 02, and that’s why I had the socks that were mocked like soccer socks. And then I just felt really hot in smaller shorts. My mom’s like, ‘Those are under.’ I’m like, ‘Mom, but with my curves, they’re like they compliment me the most. Like everything else just didn’t look right.’ So it really was from just me being a sexy tomboy and being who I was before wrestling.”
Brie Bella Said Their Original Look Was Based On Their Latina Heritage
Brie Bella then chimed in. She referenced their original look with ruffles and flowers in their hair, wanting to showcase their background as Latinas. However, they soon felt too “little girl” and ditched the look.
“Even though when we first started, we were very Latina-inspired. And I think too, ’cause we went on Smackdown and knowing, you know, just the demographic was more Latin. We were wearing ruffles and roses. We were like, ‘Well, we’re half Mexican, so let’s show.'”
“So we felt sexy as Latinas, I mean, and even as Italian women, we’re Mexican-Italian, but, um, we really loved our sass as Latinas. And that’s when we created the ruffles in the back and, um, the roses in the hair. But I think we felt almost too little girlish for a while ’cause we were dressing identical, we had to really talk alike. I mean, you know, we were the first identical twin girls to debut, so for them it was just like, ‘Well, that’s your gimmick, you gotta look alike, you gotta talk at the same time.'”
