Santos Escobar discusses Rey Mysterio winning the WWE United States Championship.
Escobar defeated Rey Mysterio to earn a shot at the gold on the July 28 episode of WWE SmackDown. He was set to challenge Austin Theory for the title on the August 11 episode. However, Theory attacked him before the bell. Mysterio then replaced Escobar and beat Theory to win the gold.
Speaking on The Babyfaces Podcast, Escobar shared his thoughts on the situation.
“I’m a little disappointed because I didn’t get to defeat Austin Theory, which was something that, believe me, that was gonna happen,” Santos Escobar said. “I had his number. I still have his number. Thank god Rey was there. We stick together like family. I’ve fought for him before, and this was an opportunity for him to pay back.
“He asked for my blessing, and of course, he got it. We defeated Austin Theory. I know Rey is the champion, but it almost feels like the LWO is the champion.
Escobar was also asked whether he could see himself challenging Mysterio for the title in a singles match. He expressed his belief that Mysterio will give him a shot at the gold when the time is right.
“Absolutely,” Santos Escobar said. “We already went at it, just to get an opportunity at this title. Now that he holds the title, the one thing that I know for sure is that he will give me an opportunity when the time comes.
“I’m not ready to compete right now because of Austin Theory, and before I go for the title, I would like to repay Austin in kind.
