The Elite Beat Death Triangle, Win AEW Trios Titles On 1/11 AEW Dynamite

The Elite pulled off a remarkable rally in their best-of-seven series against Death Triangle.

At AEW Full Gear, The Elite returned and challenged Death Triangle for the AEW World Trios Championship. In the closing moments of the thrilling contest, Fenix scored the tainted win by hitting Omega with a hammer. AEW then announced the Best of Seven series, which would end with a seventh match on the January 11 episode of AEW Dynamite (if necessary).

In the second match of the series, the two trios clashed on the November 23 episode of AEW Dynamite. At the end of the hard-fought bout, which featured several references to CM Punk in the aftermath of “Brawl Out”, Death Triangle scored the win. Matt Jackson went to use a ring bell hammer as a measure of payback for the champion’s methods at AEW Full Gear, but Penta blasted him with another hammer. As a result, Death Triangle took a 2-0 lead in the series.

The series continued on the November 30 episode of AEW Dynamite, and the trios kicked off the bout with a wild brawl around the arena. In the end, Matt Jackson stunned PAC by countering a Black Arrow for the pin and the win. As a result, they won their first match in the series, and they cut their deficit to 2-1.

In the fourth match, a crucial injury was the main story in the contest. Nick Jackson went to the back with an apparent ankle injury. Omega and Matt fought valiantly, despite being down a man. In the closing minutes, Nick limped back down to the ring, but the decision cost The Elite, as Penta nailed his wounded ankle with a ring bell hammer. Fenix then locked in a knee bar and forced Nick to tap out, so Death Triangle took a 3-1 advantage.

After the bell, Omega challenged Death Triangle to make the next match a No Disqualification Match.

On the December 21 episode of AEW Dynamite, the series continued with a chaotic No DQ Match. In the end, the Jacksons hit the Meltzer Driver on Fenix on top of a chair for the win.

The sixth match was held on the December 28 episode of AEW Dynamite. The two teams waged war in a wild Falls Count Anywhere Match. In the end, Omega pinned Fenix with an avalanche One-Winged Angel through a table. In doing so, The Elite tied the series and forced a seventh match.

Here’s how the match broke down, courtesy of our play-by-play coverage:

The two teams start brawling backstage. Penta dishes out punishment with a garbage can. Pac dives off some equipment and onto Omega and the Bucks. Matt drills PAC with a superkick. Nick sends Penta through a table with a dive and seemingly hurts his arm on the landing. The match finally makes its way into the arena as the teams fight on the stage. Fenix dives off the entrance tunnel and onto the Bucks. Omega levels Fenix with the V-trigger. PAC plants Omega with a German suplex on the ramp. Matt hits PAC with several northern lights suplexes. Penta and Nick brawl into the crowd. PAC and Omega are left alone in the ring for a minute before Penta comes in. Death Triangle gains the upper hand, and they hit a triple dropkick on Omega. The former world champion rallies. Matt Jackson drops Penta with a destroyer. Omega takes PAC down with a snap dragon. He hits PAC with a trash can, puts it on his head and hits a V-trigger.

Omega hits a powerbomb for a two count. The Lucha Brothers hit Omega with the Fear Factor on the floor. Fenix fires up and takes The Elite down by himself with an explosive flurry of offensive. Nick throws a chair at PAC’s head. The Young Bucks hit the BTE Trigger on Penta for a two count. PAC dodges a kick, forcing Nick to kick Matt. Omega hits an avalanche One-Winged Angel on Fenix through a table for the win, just as PAC has Matt locked in the Brutalizer and on the verge of tapping out.

The series concluded with an Escalera de la Muerte (ladder) match on the January 11 episode of AEW Dynamite. In the end of a chaotic match that saw multiple broken tables, The Elite emerged victorious. As a result, they won the series and the titles.

The match quickly breaks down into a fight. Bodies are flying as the foes trade fast-paced offense. PAC drops Nick Jackson with a cutter, and Fenix hits a splash. Fenix dives onto Omega at ringside, but Nick dives right onto him. Omega drops Penta with a snap dragon. PAC hits a shotgun dropkick. Omega plants him with a snap dragon.  Omega goes for a dive and he crashes through a table. Matt sends PAC through another table with a dive. The Lucha Brothers take control. The Young Bucks rally, and Nick dives onto Fenix on the outside. Matt sends Penta crashing onto a ladder. Fenix hits a hurricanrana onto Nick on a ladder, and both men land awkwardly.

Omega stops PAC from climbing a ladder, but PAC drops him with a Poison-rana. The Lucha Brothers hit the Fear Factor on Omega. Fenix dives onto Nick at ringside. The Young Bucks keep fighting, and Matt suplexes Fenix onto a ladder. Matt goes to climb the ladder, but Alex Abrahantes stops him. Cutler sprays him with his bottle, and Omega drills Alex with a V-Trigger. PAC uses the hammer on Omega and hits the Falcon Arrow on the floor. PAC and Matt battle on the top of the ladder. Penta hits a piledriver on a ladder. Omega meets Fenix at the top of the ladder. Omega blocks the Black Arrow by getting the knees up. Omega climbs the ladder and unhooks the titles to win the match.
