Bryan Danielson wants to wrestle his last match and not actually know it’s his last match.
During a recent appearance on One Fall with Ron Funches, Bryan Danielson was asked about how he sees his pro wrestling career finishing up. Danielson says he knows his current contract with AEW will be his last as a full-time wrestler, then explained how he’d like to have his last match.
“I would like to wrestle a match two weeks before I die, and to not know that it’s my last match. That would be my ideal situation, but I’m not going to be a full-time wrestler for much longer. [laughs] All that said, I’m not going to be a full-time wrestler for much longer. When my AEW contract is up, that’s pretty much me being done being a full-time wrestler. I like the way some people like Terry Funk and Jerry Lawler and those guys do it, where they just do it for fun and they don’t do it all the time. Here and there, that sort of thing, but as long as I have fun doing it and as long as I experience joy doing it, it’s something I want to continue doing for the rest of my life.
“Now I wish my passion was something that didn’t cause me as much physical pain [laughs]. If I was really good at playing the guitar, which I could be if I put enough effort into it and if it brought me that kind of passion, I could be playing music, or whatever, literally the day before I die. But as it is, it would probably have to be at least two weeks, if not a little bit before the day that I die.”
Danielson went on to explain that when he was forced to retire from WWE due to his injuries, he realized that you never know when your last match will be. Danielson said he didn’t know his last match (at that time) was his last match, and it was the last one for years. On a larger scale, Danielson said he learned not to take things for granted.
“I don’t have any kind of vision what I want my last match to be. I don’t envision it being some epic match that everybody talks about. In my mind, I would just be doing it at some local indie in front of 300 people, but it’s like ‘OK, I’m just going out and having fun’ and it just so happens to be my last match. [laughs] That’s kind of how I envision it.”
