Matt Hardy says the return of the “Broken Matt” persona isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Hardy, a 30-year veteran, has reinvented himself throughout his career by portraying a range of distinct characters. Most notably, the Broken Matt character revitalized him and his brother Jeff, who played Brother Nero as part of the storyline. Matt later brought the broken character to AEW when he signed with the company in 2020, but this run was somewhat short-lived before he progressed into the “Big Money Matt” character.
Speaking on the newest episode of The Extreme Life with Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy was asked whether fans will see the return of the “Broken Matt” character. He stated that he thinks there’s a chance, and his current pairing with The Firm could lead to him being broken.”
“Yeah, I think there’s a chance,” Hardy said. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility. It could definitely happen. We’ll see. It’s gonna be real interesting to see how this whole scenario with myself and The Firm, how it ends up playing out. Who knows? This might lead to me being broken.
Hardy went on to describe the importance of evolving in wrestling. He noted that companies have to produce fresh content every week, and talent must find ways to evolve and keep moving forward.
“You always gotta evolve. You always gotten freshen up. You can’t do reruns,” Hardy said. “Much like how professional wrestling, 52 weeks a year, it’s like new first-run content. We don’t do reruns in wrestling. You always have to move the story forward. You always have to move the story forward. You always have to evolve. Same thing goes when you revisit a different character. That would be the case with Broken Matt as well.”
