The COVID-19 pandemic was extremely difficult on Sam Adonis and countless others in the world of independent wrestling.
Sam Adonis recently sat down with Saul Berrios-Thomas of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about how difficult it was to be a professional wrestler on the independent scene during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Adonis said the situation put his entire life into perspective.
“In that time, my entire life was put into perspective,” Sam Adonis said. “Your late 20s to mid 30s are the prime of your wrestling career. To lose two years of that really opened my eyes. I started delivering packages for Amazon. Just any way I could get some income in, because my career was put on hold.”
Thursday night at Wrestlerex in Pittsburgh, Adonis will take on his long-time AAA rival Psycho Clown. Adonis recalled how his rivalry with Pyscho Clown started in Dallas and carried on all throughout Mexico.
“The Mexican media showed up to film the show. It was almost like my resurgence,” he said. “We went out and had this war. We beat each other with everything, all over the building. Both of us were bleeding from the head. It was intense. Three months later, I got the chance to wrestle him more. We have wrestled about 20 times now, all over Mexico. Wrestling is different in Mexico. The fans live and die with every match and every show. I am one of the most hated wrestlers in Mexico. At the same time, Pittsburgh has the best fans in the world. And I can’t wait for Pittsburgh to show that again for our fifth show.”
