Former Ring of Honor star Brody King is now “All Elite”, as he signed with All Elite Wrestling. He’s already featured on AEW programming, as he has teamed up with Malakai Black to form the House of Black. But given King’s impressive size and remarkable in-ring skill, it’s fair to assume he’s at least been on WWE’s radar.
During a recent appearance on Talk Is Jericho, when asked whether he had ever talked with the promotion, King noted that there had been some communication. Specifically, he described how he spoke with former NXT General Manager William Regal, who played a vital role in building up the roster throughout the black-and-gold era, at the 2018 Battle of Los Angeles tournament. King recalled how Regal gave him his number and made it clear he could have wound up in WWE if he wanted to.
“He was like, you know you’re a great wrestler, like you’re obviously gonna do great stuff,'” said King. ” Your style is obviously more of a fit for something like Ring of Honor at the time or New Japan, he’s like go do all of these things that you want. And after you’re done with that, if you want to come to WWE, here’s my number. So I was like that’s pretty cool.”
That being said, King explained that WWE wasn’t his goal because he didn’t feel like he fit with the company’s style. Instead, he emphasized how he loves New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s style of wrestling, which he also sees in AEW.
“And you know like I said, being a person that doesn’t want to be in one spot, going to the same place every time, it was like okay, let’s see where this takes me,” said King. “And as time has progressed, WWE just wasn’t in my sights. I feel like the style, or anything like, it just wasn’t for me. I love New Japan Pro-Wrestling. I feel like it’s, in essence, that is like what I want to be as a professional wrestler. And I feel like a lot of that is translated to AEW now. So it’s like a perfect fit.”
King is already becoming a breakout star in AEW, as House of Black’s dark persona sets it apart from the majority of the other characters in the company. With this in mind, he believes the team has a lot to offer the company. He also compared House of Black to the Ministry of Darkness, a memorable stable from the Attitude Era that featured The Undertaker, among other noteworthy names. King stated that it’s “awesome” to tap into the darker side of wrestling through his work in AEW.
“I think with House of Black, we really have something different to offer,” said King. “You know, I don’t want to really compare it to anything directly, but it has a very Ministry of Darkness aura around it, and that was something that latched onto me as a kid, like watching all these crazy people and crucifying Stone Cold [laughs]. But that was stuff that was like, this is awesome. That was stuff that grabbed me as a kid and was like this is what I want in wrestling. This is what I want in movies and music and everything.
“So to kind of be able to put our spin on something like that and be the darker element of wrestling that I feel like has kind of been missing for quite some time, is awesome.”
House of Black will face Penta El Zero Miedo and PAC on the February 23 episode of AEW Dynamite.
